THE BACKSTORY:
Last fall Sarah traveled to the island of Lesvos, Greece, to volunteer and support refugees who are stuck there indefinitely as they seek asylum. In the meantime, she made a good friend with a young Afghani woman who was living in the terribly overcrowded camp Moria with her husband and now 2-month-old baby. They live in between the worlds of Afghanistan and whatever country will open their doors to them to escape the violence and strife of their previous lives. Their newborn baby was gifted a small hand-knitted blanket which inspired Sarah when she returned home to the U.S. to create "Idle Knot" with her Swiss/American friend, Sabrina. They want to challenge their communities to help them make 100 baby blankets by Fall of 2019, ready for the upcoming bitter winters on Lesvos. They both have children of their own and want to spread the love and warmth that they grew up in and keep their hands busy as we all search for solutions on a deeper level. But in the meantime, there are babies who are living in horrible conditions who will thrive better wrapped in a blanket made by people from across the world who care about them. Blankets and quilts traditionally connote security and love, and we hope these "babies without borders" will feel a little more welcomed wrapped in one.
THE PROJECT DETAILS:
Sarah and Sabrina are asking folks to consider challenging themselves and their friends, family members, knitting groups, senior centers, to knit/crochet or sew a blanket for this effort! Any size blanket is fine, but we think 20"x 25" is a good minimum size. Any material is fine, any color and/or patterns in yarn or size needles...you choose!
By October the blankets will be ready for shipment to "One Happy Family" (www.ohf-lesvos.org) on Lesvos Island which will distribute the blankets to needy babies. If you are using your knitting machine, you are welcome to choose your own dimensions (same applies to blankets made out of cloth).
Can't knit, sew, or crochet? Never fear, you can pitch in by purchasing a receiving blanket or baby blanket from either one of the following sites or from any place (like your favorite local store) and mail it to us to put in our collection headed for Lesvos!
